T32 TRAINING PROGRAM IN DIABETES TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH
The purpose of this T32 postdoctoral training program is to help develop the next generation of researchers with the necessary skills to identify and overcome barriers to translating evidence into practice for patients with type 2 diabetes. The program is based at the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research and conducted in collaboration with research faculty from the Health Delivery Systems Center for Diabetes Translational Research, the UCSF School of Medicine, and the UC Berkeley School of Public Health, with funding from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). T32 postdoctoral fellows will have the unique opportunity to develop translational and delivery science research and writing skills for presentations and publications, while being mentored by experienced scientists in diabetes care and prevention. Investigators have access to rich data resources, including a robust, longitudinal, electronic medical record system, and work to translate research findings into the clinical care setting within one of the nation’s leading integrated health care delivery systems.
Kaiser Permanente is an integrated health care delivery system with a diverse membership in eight regions across the United States. In the Northern California region, Kaiser Permanente includes a health plan with 4 million members, a network of 21 hospitals and 100 ambulatory medical offices, and a multi-specialty physician group with more than 8,000 physicians.
The Division of Research, which is part of Kaiser Permanente Northern California, has more than 500 people on staff, including 53 faculty-level investigators with 350 ongoing, funded projects on a wide range of health research topics. In 2017, the Division's research portfolio included over $84 million in grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health, other federal agencies, private foundations, industry, and Kaiser Permanente. Our investigators have made contributions in many research areas, including disease prevention, patient engagement, chronic illness management, clinical trials, clinical effectiveness, the role of genes and the environment in health, inpatient care, predictive modeling, program evaluation, health informatics, and delivery science.
Founded in 1961, the Division's research program has been built on a base of rigorous epidemiologic and health services investigation. The Division has a long tradition of training post-graduate fellows for future work in integrated health care systems and academia.
- Enhance skills (framing impactful research questions, applying robust research methods, grant writing, manuscript publication, and oral presentations) to help highly qualified researchers pursue successful research careers in diabetes care and prevention.
- Conduct research to help support advances in how medical care is delivered within Kaiser Permanente's integrated care setting and the U.S. health care system overall.
- Be prepared to apply for positions in academic or health system settings upon completion of the fellowship program.
The one to two year, full-time program includes:
- Individualized scientific mentorship on at least two diabetes care and/or prevention studies
- Weekly works-in-progress meetings with faculty and fellows
- Experience writing at least two first-authored publications based on Kaiser Permanente Division of Research projects
- Monthly seminar series on career and skills development topics
- Core competency training in translational research and delivery science methods
- Fellows with clinical training have the potential for maintaining a modest amount of clinical activity (arranged on a case-by-case basis)
We seek outstanding candidates with health professional doctorate degrees (MD, DO, PharmD, Nursing PhD) and/or research doctorate degrees (PhD, ScD, DrPH) in related fields. Applicants must be eligible for U.S. employment. Women and minority candidates are encouraged to apply.
The fellowship stipend is paid through the T32 grant (T32DK11668401) and conducted under an employment contract with The Permanente Medical Group; compensation includes salary, benefits, and tuition reimbursement.

T32 MEDICAL STUDENT RESEARCH PROGRAM IN DIABETES
The Medical Student Research Program in Diabetes is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health through the NIDDK and allows medical students to conduct research under the direction of an established scientist. At the Division of Research in Oakland, medical students will work with scientists on health services and delivery science research projects during the summer between the first and second year or second and third year of medical school. The Program helps students gain an improved understanding of career opportunities in delivery science research.
